Methyl acetate, formula CH3COOCH3. Molecular weight 74.08. Colorless flammable liquid with odor. It has a spicy taste. It is volatile. It occurs naturally in grapes and bananas. The melting point is -98.1ºC, the boiling point is 57ºC(101.3325kPa), the relative density is 0.9330, the refractive index is 1.3595. Soluble in ethanol, water, benzene. Soluble in water up to 24% at 20ºC.

  

Product Application

 

1. Methyl acetate is used as a fast drying solvent for cellulose acetate for paint coatings. It is also used in the manufacture of artificial leather and spices and as an extractant for oils and fats. It's also used to make dyes and medicines.
2. Used as a standard material and organic solvent for chromatographic analysis (cellulose nitrate, oil, resin and paint), and also used for the synthesis of lithium chloride and spices separated from alkali metal chlorides. GB 2760:1996 specifies methyl acetate as a permissible edible fragrance.
